birth name~ Vkaen Cindor [Vy-kane Sin-door]
nicknames~ Kaen Cindersleet - A joking nickname given to reference the last great firestarter, Lavan Firestorm, most often employed by bards who think that it's clever to phoeneticaly abuse his surname.
age && date of birth~ Aged twenty and eight years; born in the year 1376 A.F. (After Founding) under the rule of Queen Selenay
gender~ Male
species~ Karsite
sexuality~ Polysexual Androphilic, sexual switch [He'll have a relationship with any sex, but he's interested in masculine personalities, regardless of gender assignment associated with said psyche]
occupation~ Herald-Mage, former soldier in Karse's army
face claim~ Kourosh Sadeghi
fandom~ Heralds of Valdemar
canon / original~ Original
hair color~ Atrous
eye color~ Caesious
height~ 6'7"
weight~ 230 lbs
distinctive features~ His eyes and skin are non-traditional for a Karsite, who tend to have deeply tanned flesh and dark brown or black eyes. His eyes used to be black, but slowly leached of colour with time to become a bluish-grey. His skin still holds some of its dark pigment, but has been bleached with time due to the use of magic. He also retains a myriad of battle scars he's gained through time.
general appearance~
Often described as a mountain of a man, Vkaen is intimidating in stature and stands hands above most other men. He is built like a stone wall with broad shoulders and a muscular form that could take down a horse. He has hair so dark that it almost seems to absorb the light around it, a blackness that is both inky and intense; it is kept at shoulder length, often oiled to keep it under control and tends towards a slight curl. His eyes are an intelligent and open blue-green that seems to have been desaturated with time. His facial features are strong with high cheek bones and a squared jaw; he rarely shaves despite the stigma against facial hair in Haven. He has large and strong hands with long digits that were built to be anything but graceful or gentle.
His garb tends towards the drab when he is left to his own devices and tends to be functional with loose fitted dun coloured breeches, and a long tunic of the same colour, a slightly darker sash falling into place around his middle. He will often bind up his arms from the wrist all of the way to the elbow in a thin leather to keep his tunic sleeves in place. He wears thick and heavy boots, as well as a black or brunneous cloak. When he is on official business, he will wear his Heraldic whites along with stylings in argent. He almost always has at least a sword on him, though he will frequently have more as his outfit allows.
likes~
The Queen of Valdemar was one of the first to greet him into his new life, and with her experience with Alberich as well as some other reformed Karsites, she was able to make him feel welcome in the country. He is immensely loyal to her and considers her to be his keeper given that she offered him political asylum when he had been sentenced to death. On top of his honour bound devotion to the Heralds, he simply wants to both impress and protect her. He naturally has a fair relationship with the rest of the royal family including Elspeth, who he was very close to for a short time when his mage sight first awoke.
02. KREA~
Krea is his companion, a horselike creature with pure white fur and eyes as blue as the day sky. They have hooves like silver, and are as intelligent as any human. As with all companions, she can speak to him through a form of mental link, She is significantly larger than most companion mares, and often wears battle armor rather than the light-weight harnesses that they are accustomed to. Despite her size, she happens to be amazingly dexterous and graceful, a beautiful creature who is both wise and playful. When he was set to be burned alive, Krea intervened and tore him from the grips of the Sunpriests who wanted him to die. They are immensely close and he loves her much the way a brother loves a sister.
03. SWORD PLAY~
He was seemingly born with a sword in his hand, and even from a young age, could be found with a stick or some other such blunt object swishing about like mad in an effort to entice a sibling into a fight. When he joined the Karsite army, he was given the perfect outlet for his passion, and quickly rose through the ranks for his fighting prowess, skill, and decisive nature in the heat of battle. He has a sword on him at all times and has been known to toss young Heralds in training, into the ring in order to teach them a thing or two about what it means to be a warrior.
04. HORSEBACK RIDING~
Well, companionback riding would be a more apt term, as no reasonable companion would ever be called a horse, no matter how simillar in apperance they are. Vkaen loves to go out on Krea and has been known to do so in his free time for hours when he can get away from the palace and the collegium. He is quite possibly the only Herald who actually enjoys border duty due to the heavy amount of riding and potential for danger involved.
05. BARDS & MEAD~
Bards and mead go hand in hand, or rather; mead goes in one hand and a handsome bard goes in the other. Vkaen enjoys some good music, or a nice epic tale told (hopefully one of his own) about the Heralds and their many courageous exploits. The only thing that makes some entertainment better is to have some honey mead warming one's belly.[/ul]
dislikes~
Karse is a desert land that is bleached by the sun itself. He hates the people there, and considers them to be both doll and fanatical. Of course, it is also his home land. His views generally come from his hatred for the Sunpriests, who were reformed after he left Karse. He has come to accept them more, but still distrusts the members of the priesthood who summoned demons. They tried to kill him, so he makes no bones about wanting to see them dead as well.
02. CRIMINALS~
Mostly to do with his 'job', Kaen despises those who break the law (even if he'll do it himself occasionally) and has a long history of patrolling Haven in hopes of finding vagrants in hopes of being able to help clean up the streets.
03. DEPENDENCE~
Being immensely independent himself, he hates to see anyone who 'needs' another person or is reliant on anything. He finds himself disgusted even in the Heraldic Circle, by people who are to dependent on their companions or on their Gifts, and often finds himself pushing his peers towards situations where they can't indulge in that type of thing. Naturally, not many people like him.
04. TRAITORS~
The only thing worse than a criminal is a traitor. For a man who believes in truth and loyalty, the prospect of someone making an allegience and then goin against it, or outright harming the one they oathed to is not only disgraceful; it's something that should result in execution. He takes anyone who betrays him very seriously.
05. COLD~
Having been born in one of the hottest countries in Velgarth, he hates the cold. He will often be found in thick layers of clothing even during the warm seasons, and during the winters; he usually demands to be able to go on border patrol down south. Otherwise he's absolutely insufferible and complains (read as: whines) until he gets his way.[/ul]
habits~
Just because he's a sword man doesn't mean he can't use a bow, in fact he will often go out to the archery range on his down time in order to relieve a bit of stress and improve on his otherwise horrible shot (Yes, just because it's a habit doesn't mean he's any good at it).
02. DRINKING~
The best way to end a day is to get a pint to drink and just relax. He enjoys the strong stuff, and can put away copious amounts before he has to give it up and turn in for the night. He is a bombastic drunk and will both sing and dance in order to have a perfectly good time.
03. WAR GAMES~
Unsurprising for the former warrior, he thrives on war games and will often break out something involving either sword play or tactics. It has become common law in the collegium that one doesn't talk to Kaen unless they want challenged to some kind of fight. All good natured of course.
04. PET NAMES~
'Kiddo, kid, fledge', or any other of a number of other little names, they tend to be light hearted and kind. He gives them to just about everyone.
05. DISOBEDIENCE~
Nine times out of ten, if anyone gives him an order, he'll find a way to outright disobey or get somewhat clever to get out of it. He likes to do things his way, and will do them in that fashion regardless of who tries to convince him otherwise. [/ul]
strengths~
With an almost fanatical sense of right, he believes very deeply when he does put himself into the position to believe. What does this mean? If he likes you, he will protect you with his life. If he loves you, he will worship you and treat you like the most divine of creatures. If he dislikes you, you might as well be crap, and if he hates you, you should probably be sure he isn't near a weapon. More than just people, he holds a lot of passion for ideas and motivations, but tends to be set in his ways when it comes to them, so while he is passionate, he isn't a flake.
02. BATTLE HARDENED~
He's essentially been in battle since as old as he could pick up a sword and swing it; as such, he's one of the more battle hardened members of the Heraldic Circle. His love for fights only seems to have underscored this and made him into a beast of a killing machine. His preference is to incapacitate when he can and he has perfected the art of slicing off limbs at the wrist as opposed to outright murdering his opponents. He is the epitome of the seasoned veteran.
03. MAGIC~
When he first came to the collegium, he was a gifted FireStarter, but he had no clue that there was a potential for magic burried deep in him. When Elspeth became the first Herald-Mage, he worked with her to unlock the channels within him and found that he had the mage sight that gifted him with the ability to see and use ley lines. He rarely uses the magic, none the less, because it is extremely addictive and has the potential to both kill or deteriorate a physical body. The form of magic he was taught is highly ritualised and involves what amounts essentially the use of talismans, incantations, enchantments, and other such objects in order to harness the spells in place as opposed to the direct speak and action form of magic that most other of the Herald-Mages use. It is presumed that he uses this form of magic because it is less taxing and easier on his weaker capabilities.
04. MIND-MAGIC~
His first ability to manifest was a very weak talent for Fetching, which is to say that he could pull objects to himself or move them around for short distances. Of course, he basically ignored this and pretended it didn't happen like any good Karsite. A smidgen of FarSight made him excellent in battle and he used it religiously despite knowing that it was a sin to use the 'evil magic' of the Valdemar Heralds. However, the Gift he is most known for is his FireStarting. He is the most gifted since the days of Lavan Firestorm and can rain down flames on a battlefield, and bathe a land in a scorching conflagration. The ability gives him severe headaches and he can slip into a coma or die if he were to overstrain himself or use the Gift too frequently in a short period of time.
05. HONOURABLE~
He will always do what he thinks is right; even if what is right isn't what he was ordered to do or what other people expect. He has a very strong inner compass and while he may be an outright ass to most people, he will also be the very first one there to protect them or 'save the day'.[/ul]
weaknesses~
There's quick to anger and then there's Kaen. He will squabble with just about anyone (including the queen) and is frequently considered to be rude. His rage seems to flip like a switch, and he really has a hard time reigning it back in.
02. PARANOID~
He likes to think of himself as intelligent in the way in which he suspects everyone, but really he's just paranoid on a level that verges on crazy. He doesn't trust anyone who he hasn't known for some time, and while he may pretend to; it's very likely that he's just trying to keep people's minds at ease and their guard down so that he can catch them trying to screw him over. He sleeps with a knife under his pillow, right next to Crouton.
03. CLOSED & GUARDED~
To describe his exterior; it is a lot like the desert being both dry and desolate. He is not an inviting man by any means, and this is primarily because he enjoys his privacy and solitude. He keeps to himself most frequently and seemingly detests anyone who pushes at his boundaries. This is also partially due to his paranoia.
04. IMMATURE~
Ever have the kind of person who likes to hear about themselves, likes to play tricks on people, and most often returns insult for insult? If so, then you've probably met Vkaen in one form or another. From a developmental point of view, he is much like a petulant teen when it comes to authority figures, and still is in that 'phase' where he shows someone he likes them by being mean to them. He has a difficult time taking responsebility for his actions (unless it's a dire situation), and enjoys flinging himself into potential conflict with the assumption that he will live forever.
05. SARCASTIC~
For a man who doesn't like to talk to people, he uses sarcasm as a tool to void himself of people who think it's a good idea to interact with him. By now, it's second nature and whenever he breaks from his quiet mold, his comments tend to be sardonic, objective, and observational. He also uses sarcasm to mask his own nerves and will frequently insult people who get under his skin - which generally means that he treats people who are trying to kill him just about the same as someone hitting on him.[/ul]
goals~ To protect Valdemar, and more specifically Selenay
secrets~ Crouton - a seed-stuffed, cotton firecat plush, many other secrets mainly relevant to Valdemar and it's security
overall personality~
Much like the land of his birth, the man is both harsh and difficult. Outwardly, he likely seems as if you wouldn't want to go anywhere near him, which is to say that he comes off unapproachable, reserved, silent, and pugnacious. The majority of his relationships involve some kind of squabbling about one thing or another and he has absolutely no problem with telling someone what he thinks or feels (so long as it's about them). He is closed off to the world and secretive of his motives as well as his past and tends to respond to queries about them with a series of grunts. He appears to be very brutish (and in most respects is). For those who know him, he is still quarrelsome, but generally in a light hearted way. He can be both supportive and kind, but his inner circle is horribly small, which means that the people who get to see him outside of his shell are terribly few. At his core, he is an honorable man who lives firmly by his convictions. When he believes something, he lives by it and does something about it. He's also immensely paranoid and uses sarcasm to distance himself from both people and emotion. For the right person, he would be something akin to a puppy (a really big puppy mind), but that type of person hasn't made themselves known to him yet. His immaturity is near epic, and there are as many ballads written about it as there are of his heroic exploits.
home town~ Sunhame, Karse
current residence~ Haven, Valdemar
parents~ Karkote Syndor and one of his concubines
siblings~ Dozens from Karkote and his multiple wives, though the majority were stillborn or miscarried. He had about 6 living siblings who made it to adulthood. Their names are in order of birth: Sreeya (34 - Daughter of the first wife - Married to a wealthy man - Stern and cold - On bad terms), Koil (30 - Son of the third wife - Sunpriest - Malevolent and cruel - Mutual hatred), Saridne (28 - Daughter of the second wife - Keeper of her father's home - Kind but heavy handed - Closest sibling), Carina ( 28 - Daughter of the second wife - Disowned harlot & twin of Saridne - Bawdy and open - Unknown relationship), Kaja (20 - Son of the fifth wife - Karsite Guard - strong and honorable - Kaja worships Vkaen), Asphod (17 - Son of the fifth wife - 'the youngest' - spoiled and unruly - he barely remembers Vkaen)
history~
Born in the desert land of Karse, Kaen grew up surrounded by mother figures as his father was both noble and wealthy, able to support multiple wives and concubines. Along with tons of women, he also had tons of brothers and sisters, though most of them died with age and to the cruel and unforgiving Karse landscape. When he was young, he knew he wanted to be a warrior and was enlisted in the army basically as soon as he could pick up a blade and swing it. His father was immeasurably proud of him for taking the initiative and going up through the ranks; it was something that Kaen was good at and it brought the family a lot of positive press, so everyone was happy. Of course, all good things coming to an end as they do, he was caught accidentally lighting a man on fire on the battlefield. Essentially everyone watched to stop him as he used the cursed magic, and when he got back to his base camp, an immediate trial was called. The presiding Sunpriest sentenced him to death, and the pyre was made. He was stied to the stake when what appeared to be a white horse rained down on the ceremony, dragging Kaen off to safety.
When Kaen came to hours later (he'd passed out from smoke inhalation), he was no longer in Karse at all, but in Valdemar. Naturally, there was a lot of skepticism about his intentions despite him having been picked by the companion Krea, given his nationality. However, he quickly proved himself to be a loyal and ferocious fighter on behalf of the queen. He paved himself out a reputation paved with the blood of his enemies, and hardened by the bone of Valdemar's foes. He did several tours up north (and hated it) in order to secure relations with the Tayledras. He formed a strong bond with the daughter of the queen, Elspeth, and is likely to be selected as a military advisor when she ascends the throne. These days, he spends his summers in Haven, and most winters down along the Karse border, protecting the borderlands from would be invaders or vagabonds attempting to cross in and do his land harm. He has picked up a reputation amongst the Heraldic Circle as being one of the most irascible and yet judicious members, which has made him out to be a perfect instructor because he seems to know when to have fun and when to be stern. Naturally, there are still people who distrust him, but none of them are stupid enough to say as such to his face.
