birth name~ Sirius Orion Black
nicknames~ Padfoot, Siri, Snuffles, Black, The Prisoner of Azkaban, Dogboy (thank you Cole)
age && date of birth~ 37
gender~ Male
species~ Human (Wizard/Animagus)
sexuality~ Straight
occupation~ Making Voldemort and his Death Eaters' lives hell. It doesn't really pay, but being a convicted criminal makes it slightly hard to land a day job. And then there's that half a year or so being dead. That probably would cause a few employment record problems.
face claim~ Gary Oldman
fandom~ Harry Potter
canon / original~ Canon
hair color~ Black
eye color~ Gray
height~ 6'2
weight~ 170
distinctive features~ When you're all over the news from breaking out of the highest magical securitied prison imaginable, there aren't many things about you that aren't easily distinguisable. There isn't any specifically recognizable feature to Sirius, but he's on the hard to forget side for some reason or other.
general appearance~
Sirius' appearance is probably the only good thing he'd ever say he got from his family. Apparently the genetics for good looking made up for theinsanitylesser appreciated personality quirks. Throughout his young adulthood Sirius was the model for the term tall, dark, and handsome. He had just enough a look of refinement from his formal upbringing, but at the same time he very evidently never gave a shit what people thought of him. He looked exactly like the long haired, motorcycle driving, guitar playing male that every father wanted their daughters to stay away from with a twenty foot pole. And he managed to do it with absolutely no effort- much to the infuriation of many of his male peers.
His hair is black, on the thicker side and wavy. Typically it manages to retain a casually elligant look without a lot of effort, though no effort would probably result in it being more along the lines of shaggy. In his school years he formed the tradition of growing out his hair as it got closer to the time he'd go home for holidays- mainly because his parents disapproved of it- and then cutting it right before school would start. Therefore his hair was at it's longest when he was at his most unhappy. When he cut it upon returning to Grimmauld Place, he left it at a relatively medium length. While that's become a stagnant for him, the rest of his appearance usually gives a large clue in to his mood.
Sirius was never all that fond of his eye color. Gray; it's not even a color really. He always used to get good comment on them, about how "deep" they looked. Deep, dark, mysterious, haunted. You can really read him well from his eyes; but most people can't hold gaze with him for long.
Because he was forced to wear wizarding robes as a child, he tended to stick to informal muggle clothing as much as he could in his teenage years. After Azkaban, he mixed up the best of both worlds a bit by taking to wearing a lot of vests and blazers -the finer styles of muggle clothes- really for no other reason than the fact that he actually can.
The 'nicer' clothing choice may be a slight compensation for the fact that years in prison did notably lessen his appearance, darken his demenor, and leave him on the thinner side. Like anyone who fought in both wizarding wars he has his fair share of scars, as well as a number from events with the Marauders years prior.
In his animagus form, Sirius is a large dog said to resemble the Grim- a death omen- with a wild and intimidating presence. His fur is very much akin to his hair in human form, black and fairly long, and his eyes retain their fathomless gray shading.
likes~
When you leave two people that only vaguely know each other in a confined area for a good amount of time, they're either going to end up killing each other or becoming the best of friends. Cole and Sirius' relationship is a primary example of the later. Despite a rocky start of accusations and word vomit, they found out quickly that their strengths balanced out the other's shortcomings, and they made a hell of a team and even better partners in crime. Cole is someone that Sirius genuinely enjoys being around and can be himself around with much more certainly than any other members of the Order. And despite that fact that he often teases the former Ravenclaw about any and everything, the fact that Cole stuck by him has very much increased his respect and care for his friend. Cole is one of the people that Sirius would do anything for, and messing with him would most certainly place you on a hit list.
02. JAMES POTTER~
Prongs is the first person that Sirius thinks of when he hears the words "best friend" or even "brother", despite the fact that James was killed over sixteen years ago. The time he spent with the Marauders during and just after Hogwarts was by far the best part of his life, and he can't look at the past without thinking of the people that made it that way. As it can be confirmed by anyone that knew the group, James and Sirius were always incredibly close, from the day they met until James' death. After leaving the Blacks at age sixteen Sirius moved in with the Potters and he went on to be the best man at James' wedding and the godfather to James' son. They fought alongside each other in the first wizarding war and the secret keeper decoy plan was devised by Sirius in a wholehearted attempt to protect his best friend and family. Seeing James Potter dead was by far the worst moment of his life.
03. REMUS LUPIN~
Along with James, Remus was Sirius' other best friend throughout his school years, and one Sirius was extremely protective over even before he learned of Remus' condition. Remus was the level-headed one of the lot, that at first glance it was hard to even believe that they were friends, but Sirius came to respect Remus very much for his maturity, and that wasn't to say he wasn't fun as well. Truthfully, Sirius never believed with his heart that Remus had gone to the dark side, but process of elimination had covered everyone else, and the war had taken its tole on them all. He none the less feels incridibly guilty he even momentarily infered that Remus would be the one to betray his friends. As the last two remaining Marauders (we don't count the rat) Sirius and Remus still share a very deep rooted friendship and bond.
04. HARRY POTTER~
Sirius saw Harry for the first time the day he was born, and it wasn't long after that the Marauders affectionally nicknamed him Pronglet. Made his godfather, Sirius made a promise to James and Lily to raise and protect Harry in the event anything ever happened to them. Sirius answered yes without a hesitation, but he'd never expected that within the year, they would be dead. At this point, he's sure he's hardly lived up to his role as Harry's guardian. In all truth, he hardly had the oppertunity to get to know his godson outside the time they spent in Grimmauld place together last summer. Instead of seeing this though, Sirius sees Harry how he wants to, which is in an idealistic way, as James. And because of that he cares for him as much as he does James. Which is nothing wrong (unless you're Molly.. or Snape.. or.. well, whatever, someone with a problem with it).
05. THE TONKS'~
Typically Sirius has always been on good terms with the family. Andromeda is Sirius' favorite cousin. Even though she was never as rambunctious as him she was always less high strung than Bellatrix and less high maintenance than Narcissa, making her easy to get along with and a very much a confident. He found out and was completely supportive of her relationship with Ted Tonks, keeping contact with both of them even when Andie was disowned. Though Sirius never got a chance to see her again after Azkaban he was reuinted with Nymphadora when they rebanded the Order of the Phoenix. Sirius had seen a lot of her when she was young, serving as the cool older cousin that showed off with magic tricks and gave her mother heart attacks for offering the five year old motercycle rides. He got on just as well with Tonks later in life, finding her one of the more both interesting and capable Order members.[/ul]
dislikes~
The worst thing about the Rat is that he used to be Sirius' friend. Little Peter Pettigrew, Wormtail was a Marauder. Watery eyed and spineless, but still one of them. For more than seven years James, Remus, and Sirius considered him a friend. Enough of a friend to trust him with their lives in secret. Secret so that they might protect him from some terrible unknown fate. Peter was trusted, and the mistake cost James and Lily's lives, Harry to become an orphan, and Sirius to spend thirteen years in Azkaban. Sirius wants Peter dead, and despite having listened to Harry's will when they encountered him in the Shreiking Shack, next time he has no plans of being lenient.
02. SEVERUS SNAPE~
Snape has long since mastered the art of making Sirius look like as ass. It's oh so convenient that nobody was around when he threatened Remus with the Dementors Kiss or tested out any of Voldemort's curses on them when they were younger. Snivellous was probably condemned to a life of torment before he was even born, but as a greasy Slytherin up to his eyes in dark arts and still trying to befriend Lily Evans, he shouldn't have expected anything less. Snape hung around with the crowd Sirius was ashamed to be related to, and things only got worse when he began meddling in Marauder affairs. Sirius was a fan of giving his just deserts with a few extra scoops of ice cream, and so Snivlly got everything that was coming to him and more. He should be honored really- some of the Marauders best pranks were wasted on him. In all honesty, Sirius didn't regret almost sending Snape to his death in year six, despite the fact that it was genuinely unintentional, impulsive, and simply hadn't been thought through. To this day Sirius holds onto the Marauders feud , and is on snap at and hex on sight terms with Snape (An improvement, honestly). Though the Order asked it of them, he has no intentions of attempting to play nice with the Potions "Master" any time in the near or distant future.
03. BELLATRIX LESTRANGE~
Trix the Bitch. There really isn't much more to say. Of all Sirius' deranged family members, Bellatrix is by far the most cruel, insane, and in a rather creepy way, devoted. Which of course makes her all the more fun to taunt and harass. And also, she's one of the Death Eaters Sirius would see most pleased to end up back in Azkaban or worse. Never has Sirius gotten along with his older cousin, but they got particularly hostile towards each other once Sirius was sorted into Gryffindor and began openly protesting the actions of Bellatrix and her friends (and the rest of the Slytherin pure-blooded population). To this day, she's the only person with the potential to beat him in a duel, and he was reminded of that when she killed him in the Department of Mysteries. Which.. revenge for would be nice. Other than that, she isn't more than Voldemort's lap dog and kiss up. And she and her master are welcome to crash and burn together.
04. THE MINISTRY OF MAGIC~
Up until Sirius actually had encounters with this group of people he never hated them. They were a little useless, as far as he was concerned, but as long as they stayed in the corner and kept the public's spirits up - well that was his First War mentality. They could do that and the real people could do the real fighting. After seeing first hand how the Ministry deals with its "problems" Sirius' respect for them has dropped considerably. Despite being the one with the "good guys" the Ministry is filled with some of the most stupid wizards to ever walk the face of the Earth. They're more concerned with making themselves look like they're protecting the Wizarding World that most of the time they simply forget to actually do their jobs. They've put all of zero effort into stopping Voldemort, they've shut out Harry's version of the truth, they're fear and prejiduceness keeps people like Remus out of work, and really, if they had any idea what they were doing their head fortress wouldn't be so easy to break into and their prisons to break out of. Their leader is a spineless idiot with a name that can't be respected, and the idea that he's really on Voldemorts side has crossed Sirius' mind more than once. There's enough bad people working in the Ministry and really, its only a matter of time before they do something that's going to make everyone that's trusted or believed them regret it.
05. VOLDEMORT~
There probably isn't anyone in the wizarding world other than his supporters that doesn't hate Voldemort, but it doesn't go without mentioning again. He's ruined a countless number of people's lives for a stupid selfish gain. Not to mention the completely hypocrisy of a half-blood leading the revolution for pure-blood supremacy- which is a stupid concept in its own rights. Though the majority of Sirius' anger at James and Lily's deaths is directed at Peter, he is more than aware that it was done with Voldemort's hand and also numerous times Voldemort has attempted to kill and otherwise harm his godson. He does not fear Voldemort at all and to this point has kept him from the front of his mind only because of his limitations in regards to actually doing anything about him. Now that he's "not alive" and therefor not kept from doing anything, fulfulling whims of this hatred is far more tangible.
06. NUMBER 12 GRIMMAULD PLACE~
To be funny for a moment, if Azkaban was hell on earth, then Grimmauld Place would be that room you went to just before, when you knew you were condemned to the Pit and they were just getting you ready for an eternity of torture. Of course... that only applies to Sirius. Because, like with most things that apply to Sirius, other people cant really understand it. But the house is in many ways nothing more than a gloomy, dirty, depressing pit of bad memories, and that's not to mention the screaming portrait and cranky house elf that could bot probably earn their own paragraphs on the list.
07. THE DURSLEYS~
While Sirius never personally met any of the Dursleys, James had the misfortune of sitting across from Petunia the first time he had dinner with Lily and her family. What Sirius knew from James and Lily was enough to make him disapprove of Harry living with them even before he found out that they practically abused his godson. Now that that's been going on for sixteen years, he can think of a number or cruel creative and unusual punishments he'd love to try on them if they ever have the fortune of crossing paths.
08. BEING USELESS~
This one’s hand in hand with failure. Sirius honestly can't stand sitting around while he knows that other people are out risking their lives, and really, he doesn't feel like he's worth anything unless he's putting forth some effort to help take down Voldemort. He's not in any position to protect his friends and more often than not it seems their the ones with everything under control. He also can't stand knowing he's supposed to be a parental figure to Harry, and -just. like. everyone’s. been. saying- he's not exactly cut out for it. Considering that raising Harry was his job and helping the Order the only way he could get proper vengeance, he's been rather hard on himself where those things are concerned. The first time he had a chance to do anything he died, and so, he's still being rather hard on himself as far as that's concerned.
09. CONFINEMENT~
Even before being sent to Azkaban and spending his last year in Number 12, Sirius was never the type of person that liked being tied down to a specific place. He's an active individual that strongly resists authority and orders and is easily bored; so something like forced confinement would already upset him greatly. After the two mentioned instances it became something he avoided at all costs, very honestly preferring a chance at death to being contained anywhere against his will.
[/ul]
habits~
Rules are meant to be broken. Sirius was, is, and always will be a troublemaker. Its one of those things thats just fun and thrilling, and you haven't lived if you haven't dobne something illegal at least once. Of course, he's not promoting killing or anything, but terrifying stupid muggle police men or underage drinking or.. actually, this is probably a good place to shut up. You didn't read that. Along with breaking rules on his own accord, Sirius hasa tendancy to serve as a catalyst to others' mischief, encouraging -expecially in situations he's unable to do it himself- trouble.
02. DEFYING THE ODDS~
Sirius breaks social norms on a regular basis, and when you do something that much you really have to like it if you don’t want to end up miserable. Sirius does get quite a bit of satisfaction after watching people furrow their eyebrows in confusion when they find out that he’s a Gryffindor Black or an innocent mass murderer or an intelligent mad person. He is proud that he became an animagus beofre graduating school and was the first person to successfully escape Azkaban. Hell, he came back from the dead. He likes to attempt to do the impossible, and he actually succeeds at it more often than not.
03. PACING~
Sitting still for long has never really been an option for Sirius. He's a fidgiter; to the point that others usually need to point out the action and tell him to sit down because the endless circles are giving half the room a headache. The pacing gets worse when he's thinking, trying to plan, or just in some way moving forward. His mind seems to work with his steps, the quicker and more violently he moves around the more evident it is to everyone else that he's frustrated with something.
04. SUPERIMPOSING~
This one's an entierly unconscious habit; something Sirius does in his mind to lessen the gaps between the life he knew before the the current affairs of the world. He draws parallels that aren't nesicarily always accurate between people and events, placing them where'd they'd fit in his last reality, around the time of the first wizarding war. The changes anyone's underwent since then he typically, again unconsciously, turns a blind eye towards. Things that he didn't know from before become things he did; i.e.- thirteen years of Harry's life substitued with memories of James.
05. DWELLING~
Sirius has spent and continues to spend a probably unhealthy amount of time dwelling on things from the past, both where he went wrong and can't fix his mistakes and just everything that's gone now because of it. He was a very pretent-time oriantated person at one point, when this started, and he'd still say he's living firmly for the moment. But considering that that isn't the present anymore the word to describe it technically has changed.[/ul]
strengths~
As much as Sirius will hold grudges for years on end and unleash hell on those he hates, those he cares about he’ll do anything for. He’s an extremely dependable friend that, contrary to most of the world’s opinion, can keep a secret and take it to the grave. Sirius will do everything in his power to protect those he cares for and even if it’s an on issue that means nothing to him, he’ll follow his friends’ decisions faithfully, without a question, and to whatever end.
02. RESILENCE~
Sirius is a stubborn SOB when it comes to sticking with the things and people that he supports. He takes firm stands on matters and no amount of someone telling him what he can't do or even torturing him to do otherwise is going to make him just give up. He would never became a traitor despite the consequences of retaining his beliefs. Even when its not in regards to someone or something he's willing to die for, Sirius isn't one to back down from challenges and please the enemy, and he's capable of enduring a great deal more than most others can before even considering breaking.
03. GUTSY~
Though most people consider recklessness and a lack of self preservation to be a bad thing, Sirius sees his nothing to loose situation as the perfect one to let him do everything that's needed but too dangerous to ask of anyone else that.. for lack of better words, isn't so screwed up. That's made him even more of a risk taker than he is by nature, a feat of its own. He's capable, he's willing, and he's relatively fearless as far as physical dangers go. So it may be along the lines of a cliché tragic, but if he goes down fighting Sirius wont' have any qualms at all. It'd be his only real success.
04. DUELING~
It’s the perfect opportunity to combine muggle fighting tactics, pranking jinxes, and then actual attacks. Sirius truthfully feels more comfortable on the battlefields than anywhere else. Danger stimulates his active mind to its fullest, pushes away most of his negative thoughts, and makes his quick transitions and reckless decisions seem clever as opposed to dense. Albeit he’s a little informal and dirty with his fighting tactics, he’d probably have made a good auror or soldier- for the muggle rout of it. He’s always been a competitive person, and dueling is something he’s good at without a doubt.
05. THE ELEMENT OF SURPRISE~
Well, he's just that kind of unprediactable individual. Considering that Sirius has grown up living with, gone to school with, and witnessed a number of Death Eaters' declines in Azkaban he knows how they fight better than most would, and he's good at picking out the things to taunt them with and the ways he should fight to assure throwing them off their game. He also knows how the Ministry and Order members generally tick, and while he's not putting much effort into being on either of their good sides, its useful to know exactly what he shouldn't do if he wants to actually get something done. At the moment, he's nonexistant. And damn straight he can think of some people he'd like to "haunt".
06. ANIMAGUS~
Sirius learned to become an animagus so that he could be with Remus through his transformations when they were in school. Besides serving that obvious advantage all this time, being able to turn into a dog -and being unregistered- has helped Sirius in numerous situations, including tasks on both wars, his escape from Azkaban, and sneaking into Hogwarts. Being in his animagus form gives also Sirius a sense of refuge and protection where he feels people can't read him as well as they normally can.
[/ul]
weaknesses~
So we're not all butterflies and sunshine; but Sirius tends to have a rather dark outlook on the world as a whole and see the worst in people before the better (Unless they're James or Harry or Cole someone else that gets obvious exception). Obviously, he has his reasons for the negativity, but that doesn't make the almost constant bitterness any easier to handle. He's not very trusting and is easy to offend and put on the defensive, even if you're normally on a friendly level with him.
02. LACK OF FORSIGHT~
Whether he's acting on impulse or has months on end to form a plan, Sirius doesn't often think of all the consequences to his actions. In quite a few situations Sirius has put an honest effort into foresight and genuinely thought he'd done a good job securing outcomes, but because he doesn't have a particularly good comprehension for the way most people around him think, that wasn't the case and it's consiquences were disasterly.
03. DEFENCIVE MAGIC~
It's not that Sirius isn't good at it, (though he's honestly somewhere in the middle as far as skill level goes) its just that he usually chooses never to use it. It’s not needed. It's more productive to counter an attack with an attack, surprise your enemy to a great degree, and then hope it doesn't blow up in your face too much, despite that fact that it often does just that.
04. ARROGANCE~
You can be vulnerable around your friends, but you have to approach your enemies with an air of overconfidence if you want them to fear you or respect you. While he doesn't actually think all that highly of himself, Sirius certainly acts like he does, especially towards the people that he doesn't like or respect. He can come off rather haughty and egotistical and ready to pick a fight- and he doesn't have any problem with it or want to change the way people see that particular bit of him.
05. IMMATURITY~
Realistically, Sirius hasn't had a lot of time to mature. His childhood was less than ideal, he began fighting for the Order at hardly 18, and by the time he was 21 he was serving his life sentence in Azkaban. While he's seen and dealt with more than the typical person his age, he tends to react to things the way someone much younger would. He's got little in the ways of upholding lasting personal relationships, and his coping in general is questionable. He's not very good at dealing with most of his problems because he's not yet had the teachings or experience, which makes it slightly counterproductive he serves as an advisor to someone like Harry.
[/ul]
goals~ being able to protect the people he cares about
secrets~ Far more than he'd care to have really. His biggest public secrets would have to be being an animagus and switching the secret keepers -oh, and where he currently is- but Sirius actually keeps a lot of things to himself because there are just things in his life that nobody needs to be bothered with, particualrrly if their names are Cole, Remus, or Harry.
overall personality~
Sirius is generally seen as very reckless and impulsive, jumping into situations with little to no regard for the consequences of his actions. He was a prankster throughout his school years, one of the infamous never forgotten Marauders, and while he wasn’t always the tactical mastermind behind their ideas, he found himself a rather daring executioner. He held up a guise that he was fearless and invincible, and though in that sense he's been long since proven wrong, he appears to keep those standards to this day. Along with being daring, he's nothing short of a clever and competent wizard. And though his social skills are a bit out of practice, he can still charm his way in and out of most anything with complete ease.
Despite this he can, however, be extremely difficult to get along with. With a mentality that he's up agaisnt the entire word save a few, everyone is an enemy until they proved themsevles otherwise and Sirius if on his guard. He's likely to pick fights or simply withdraw from conversations when he doesn’t like where they’re going. He’s also a bit of a paradox at times, saying one thing and meaning the exact opposite. It’s in his nature to always appear superior and confident, no matter what he actually believes. And though he will sometimes later admit his uncertainties, they never stopped him from doing anything when he had his mind set on.
On occasion he can be incredibly wise and ethical, but has a hard time living up to his own advice, especially in regards to people. He once firmly believed in living life with no regrets, but that's one of his bits of wisdom he'd far from following himself. His temper can be explosive and bitter, and he usually doesn't mean for things to come out that way. Unless of course he does, and you'd know when he was really angry at you, without a doubt.
Throughout everything though, there was no doubt about the fact Sirius is and had always been incredibly loyal. He eagerly participated in both wars as a member of the Order and he wouldn’t hesitate to do anything for his friends and those he considered his family. He’s passionate, despite anything he'll ever say, and that's one of the reasons he can't put up all the walls around himself like he'd like to all the time. He puts a hundred and ten percent into anything he really cares about, and if he feels strongly about something being right, you can't no matter how terrible the consequnce, convince him otherwise.
home town~ London, England
current residence~ Wouldn't you like to know?
parents~ Walburga Black, shrewd and worst mother alive (yes, that's an occupation thank you very much), Slytherin, deceased
Orion Black, pure-blooded bigoted ass (really, that was apparently hard work), Ministry, Slytherin, deceased
siblings~ Regulus Black, Death Eater, Slytherin, deceased
pets~ Iris. She's a Dragon... She's Cole's really, but Sirius has decided that he has part custody. And its not like the two of them are in any position to argue about it.
family~ James Potter, surrogate brother, best friend, partner in crime, Gryffindor, deceased
Harry Potter, godson, student, Gryffindor, NOT DEAD!
Cole Arden, partner in crime, best friend, Ravenclaw, NOT DEAD EITHER!
history~
Sirius didn’t have the best of childhoods. Actually, he’d go as far as to say he had one of the worst. He was born in 1960 as the oldest child to Orion and Walburga Black, and raised as the heir to his 'great' family. Besides being a typical family of the upper class, they strongly supported the idea of pureblood supremacy in the wizarding world and rejected (for the sake of making this list shorter) generally everyone that wasn't them. Sirius was taught at an early age how he was supposed to dress and behave, and who he could and couldn't associate with. His interactions with other children were very limited, time spent indoors making his a rather restless child.
Sirius’ cousins and brother all wordlessly followed what they were told, but as a young child -and to this day- Sirius had never been one to really think before doing things. He liked having fun and there wasn't much fun to be had in Grimmauld place, even after Regulus was born. Especially after actually, as there was a whole new set of rules for things that couldn't be done around the baby. Despite the fact that everyone was an infant at some point, Sirius tended to regard his brother as a thing seeking protection for most of his life. Much to his parents chagrin, Sirius' favorite game became twenty questions on why things were the way they were. And when he didn't get his answers, he wasn't above tantrums.
He must have been about five when his mother pulled him aside at a banquet, taking him into a dark room and giving him her uttermost 'concern' that he was going to be a squib, and then of course would have to face the appropriate punishment. He'd learned before that would either be death or disownment.
Sirius proved her wrong of course. Exposed to only wizarding families that used magic for everything, as soon as he started to show signs of magic he did everything in his power to prove himself capable. Not to mention, being able to use magic had its advantages in the ways of fun. It didn't take long for him to realize though that despite being quickly apt in magic, he still wasn’t a person his family was proud to be related to; Regulas had earned himself the role of the prized son, still -in Sirius' opinion- seeing coddling and protection. It had been a competition to the point, and Sirius couldn't stand the idea of loosing to a smaller child. And so he began changing his tactics, going out of his way to do everything his family forbade, and they as expected went out of their way to punish him for his disobedience.
Going off to Hogwarts, Sirius had been completely ecstatic. He wanted nothing more to spend the year away from home and learn magic. He’d been warned well what would happen if he wasn’t a Slytherin or if he associated with mudbloods, but he listened to the warning with less than half an ear. There wasn't anything they could do to him anymore. At least, until the summer. Which was far enough away it might as well have not mattered. Sirius soon found himself sitting next to James Potter on the train, teasing a greasy little git he’d names Snivellous and his red-headed girlfriend. Before long they’d become acquainted with Remus Lupin and Peter Pettigrew. The four had become best friends before they'd touched ground at the school.
Somehow they’d all landed themselves in Gryffindor; the greatest shock to everyone other than James. Other than the Marauders (not yet named) Sirius didn't go making many friends in his first year. Both Gryffindors and Slytherins were particularly distrustful of him, and the older ones especially weren't afraid to mention it. Sirius received a howler the day after his sorting, but he heard nothing of his parents for the rest of the term. When things finally settled down, the Marauders began shaping their legacy as the most popular kids in school, top of their classes, expert pranksters, flying stars, and utterly charismatic.
The prospect of returning home for holidays had caused Sirius to begin getting upset a week in advance, and when he did return with no say in it to the Most Noble and Ancient House of Black, it became impossible to go for a day without hearing someone use the term "blood traitor". Bellatrix, is particular, seemed fond of the two foul words. Sirius tended to be incredibly reactive and explosive since he hadn't yet mastered his signature bad mouth and careless attitude. He was convinced -none to wrongfully- that his family hated him, and the feeling was well mutual.
He began picking fights with Regulus over the summer, trying to get his brother to see things his way before he went to school as well. Later, he'd blame the fact that his brother went Death Eater on himself. In trying to assert his opinions, he certainly scared Regulus with the prospect of punishment from their parents. In fact, Regulus' tactic for survival in the house became being everything that Sirius wasn't.
In their second year, Sirius, James, and Peter found out about Remus’ lycanthropy and decided to become animigi to assist him during the full moons. The process took multiple years and was very difficult and dangerous, especially with their tendency to cut corners and get off topic each practice session. They were successful though, and from then on once a month -and whenever else they felt like it- Sirius was a large black dog. He’d been giving the nickname Padfoot then, and their group as a whole finally became the Marauders. That name, along with fantasies of glory sparked when James and Sirius began using their free time -homework and sleeping time usually- to scour around the secret passageways in the castle, gave them the idea for the Marauders Map.
The group's relations with the Slytherin trio, and everyone they associated with by default, had began getting violent. For the first three years, the Marauders had limited themselves to simple pranks. Pink robes and green hair. The occasionally overgrown limb or other grotesque obscenity. But Sirius felt that once real fights broke out he began learning some valuable lessons. Things like that fact permanent sticking charms work on people or that you can escape a straight jacket by dislocating your shoulder- which is painful but useful.
On his next return home Sirius put up permanent Gryffindor banners and posters of muggle girls, motorcycles, and popular rock bands. Regulus and Sirius had begun a game of silent treatments, the former now an established member of the Slytherin gang and dabbling into the dark arts books. The fights at Grimmauld Place began to involve curses. Sirius, knowing that his mother's patience wouldn't last longer and he'd be kicked out, decided to beat them to the chase and run away. That night wasn’t particularly special; it was on of those sticky summer day, Walburga was screaming, Sirius had been injured, and he actually just said bye and walked out the door. It had been an impulsive decision; one that got him blasted off the family tree. He hadn't thought about where to go, but he grudgingly found himself at the Potter’s house and they, much to his surprise, took him in with very little question. His Uncle Alphard also sympathized with him and left him a large inheritance. The remaining month of summer and the next one, would mark Sirius' only 'family' experiences.
Returning to school again it seemed things couldn’t have gotten better. That was until the feud between Snape and him reached its peak. Since year one Sirius and his friends had harassed the Slytherin with pranks and something big to kick off the new year had been in order. Sending Snape to the Shrieking Shack had actually been with the intent of protecting Remus, who Snape was getting closer to in his attempt to figure out his disappearances. Sirius hadn't at any point thought that Snape could be killed, but later he'd admit that even if he was, it would have served the nosy idiot right. The instance caused a conflict with both his friends and Snape's friends- Avery in particular, who saw it fit to attempt some sort of revenge, that Sirius almost accepted willingly (Not cause he felt bad about Snape mind you, but the Marauders weren't associating with him). It didn't take too long for his friends to forgive Sirius though, and he was grateful. Because if they hadn’t, he had no idea what he’d have done with himself. Their Graduation ceremony went out with a bang- literally. The quartet had dedicated their last two months to that prank alone. They hid the Marauders map on campus with a fond farewell message to whomever next found it and they graduated proudly.
Sirius had a lot of things he’d wanted to do after graduation and none of them really involved fighting a war. However, war had started and for him it was extremely personal. Since picking fights with Death Eaters and pureblood insanity was sometimes he was used to fighting on a regular basis, he was quick to join the first Order of the Phoenix. The battles of the war were just that, battles. Bloody, difficult, but glorious to win. Sirius used every opportunity to fight with his cousin Bellatrix, though it was a secondary goal to keeping his friends -also Order members- safe. James and Lily had married just before the break out, after a bachelor party that was both the Marauders first and last time in a muggle amusement park. In the midst of the war, Lily became pregnant and gave birth to Harry Potter, Sirius' godson.
Voldemort had taken a interest in Harry - something they found out after only two months and Sirius would never quite forget the look on Dumbledore’s face when he gave them the news- and the Potters were to go into hiding. James had decided adamantly that Sirius should be their secret keeper; a brilliant plan, other than the fact it was obvious. Sirius was well aware Voldemort would go strait for him, and he’d be tortured for information. Of course, yes, he would willingly die for James and Lily and Harry- he’d willingly be put through a fate worse than death. But he had a lingering fear something would go wrong, especially with all the mind altering Unforvigables that he'd seen first hand used in battle. To be on the safe side for the first time ever in his life, and really only because it was James' life on the line, he convinced them to have Peter be their secret keeper. He was a meek thing, one they’d never go after. And with Peter, James, and Lily hiding, Sirius was still the decoy that Voldemort would chase. It was flawless now. Flawless had Peter not been a Death Eater.
On Halloween night Sirius knew something had went wrong. He knew it was wrong at Pettigrew’s empty house. He knew it was wrong the whole trip to Gordic’s Hollow. The house was destroyed and the first thing he was met with in the hallway was James' dead body. Sirius had taken Harry out, the poor kid. But Hagrid came and took him away, to live with some muggle relative of Lily’s that they'd all never gotten along with. He wasn’t happy about it, but he gave Hagrid his flying motorcycle and wished them the best. He had other things to do.
He tracked down Peter with every intention of murdering him, but he was outsmarted. The rat really knew him well enough. Peter exploded the street, killed twelve muggles, and faked his own death. Sirius was captured by Aurors and sentenced to a life in Azkaban without a trial. For twelve years hew was tortured by Dementors, keeping his sanity only by obsessing over his friends’ deaths, Peter’s betrayal, and his innocence.
In 1993 he became the first person to ever escape Azkaban, managing to regain enough strength to transform into his animigus form where it was harder for Dementors to sense the his mind. He found out from the Daily Prophet that Pettigrew was posing as Ron Weasley’s rat at Hogwarts. In his malnourished animigus form he slipped through the bars and swam across the North Sea. It was an attempt with minimal chances at survival , as if the island really needed the extra precautions of a sea- but he managed probably out of sheer determination.
Sirius stayed around Hogsmeade after managing a glimpse of Harry one night. He lived off scavenging the local shops and became acquainted with Hermione’s cat who saw him and Peter for what they were without any trouble, attempting even to bring him the rat. Impatient with the plan that ultimately failed, he snuck into Hogwarts himself. Finally in June he dragged Ron and Pettigrew together down to the Shrieking Shack. Harry himself would have killed Sirius if it wasn't for Remus, who’d seen Peter on the map and realized what had happened. They revealed Pettigrew's true form and were about to kill him after telling the story to the children. Harry, assuming that it would be in James' best wishes, managed to convince them out of the deed.
Sirius was disheartened but managed to obey Harry. Once again, time proved to be everything but on his side. It was the night of a full moon and Remus hadn’t taken his potion in the mess of things. Sirius was forced to transform and fight Remus to protect the children (and Snape, but he didn't really matter) but Pettigrew escaped and Sirius was wounded. The dementors that had been guarding Hogwarts surrounded them and nearly administered the Kiss on both Sirius and Harry, but Harry’s patronus in the form of James’ animigus saved them. Though this seems like the perfect place to put a happy ending, Snape, with all the nerve after he'd been knocked out, captured Sirius, and he was sentenced to the Dementor Kiss... again. The trio helped him escape courtesy of Hermione’s time-turner and he was sent on the run as a wanted man.
After sending Harry a last message, he lost contact with his godson and friends, focus on getting away and then diverting the Ministry’s attention from the school. He lived in caves for the better part of the summer, until receiving word from Dumbledore that he was the go to Remus, and then reband the original Order of the Phoenix. Sending the alleged mass-murderer to go gathering some of the most powerful wizards in the world hadn’t seemed like a good idea, but Sirius had taken the job gratefully. He informed Dumbledore of his family’s old house, now in his position, and they went to work on making it secure enough for headquarters and clean enough for human inhibition.
Being in the house again, particularly after he was given the orders not to leave, sent Sirius on a downwards spiral in every way possible, but he did (contrary to most people’s beliefs) understand the severity of the situation. That didn’t mean he liked it. No, he didn’t have to like it at all. Sirius joined the Order in following Harry to the Department of Mysteries and was killed dueling his cousin Bellatrix Lestrange. Now he's alive again. Go figure.
